History
My history is quite varied, having played in local bands over the last 30 or so years, playing around Europe from the old eastern block to the likes of Spain/Portugal; I find that playing within our own shores is a much more rewarding experience.
Having said this, some of my best times have been on the continent; Portugal stands out in my mind, beautiful people and country.
2011
Which brings me to now, I was going through old folders on the hard drives of my computer , looking for photographs of a holiday, can’t actually remember which one, when I came across a few really old promo shots of my time with the Rhyme. My God I had no facial hair it looked really weird, (you can see the snaps in the photo section). It brought back a lot of memories, good and bad, remembering why they were taken in the first place and how we where gonna be big stars. Yeah, I know, never happened, but the best of times and only some regrets. Anyway, it spurred me on to look for the tracks that we recorded all those years ago and finally discovered not only the Rhymes tracks but a complete recording history of material written by myself between 1980 and the millennium.
I have to be honest, the tracks that I picked out for the album are probably my own personal favourites and hopefully you will like them to.
The Album “Just Like Me”
The album had to be called “Just like me” as it’s just my style that I've had most of my playing career and I don't think I could change it now, even if I wanted to.
A quick mention about some of the tracks I think stand out,
Track 3 Sail Away , complete with children’s choir, produced by my friend Lawrence Thompson , The work he did on this song is awesome, his vision for the completed track just blew me away from
day 1 when I first let him hear it. He had this idea of using brass, orchestras, rock pianos and all I had was the children’s choir. He put it together so perfectly, I don’t think I ever got a buzz like that again of any other track recorded after that, compared to the one I got from the final mix of Sail Away.
Sadly Lawrence has passed but I owe him such a huge debt of gratitude for everything he did for me over the years, Genius is not even close when describing this man.
Track 4 inside your head , great hook and lyrically interesting for those listeners who try to discover what the song is actually saying, when in truth it’s just about self examination of where did it all go wrong.
Simples!! (Think MeerKats)
Finally Track 7 Love in Blue , This is just a feel good, sunny day track, always makes me smile and hope you love it the way I do.
The Future
I don't know if I'll do a follow up album, God knows the material I have sitting on hard drives and 1/4 inch reels would indicate there will always be that possibility. I just hope, that I can achieve the same quality or better with the next album, which of course, is always the goal.
Up and coming events/Projects
At the moment I'm currently working with a few different artists. Ready for Pulping are in the singer/songwriter category and are in the midst of writing their first album. It is an enjoyable experience just to be the engineer; these guys know how to write great songs which makes my job easy....ish.
Another musical diversion is working with Billy Murray , an accomplished Dance music writer & producer. This is a collaboration that really interests me from the point of view of never having been involved with something so Now!! The first sessions are under way and I'm definitely impressed by the quality of songs Billy has offered so far, Ya never know, I might have to go retro and buy a shell suit OMG!!!
The Group
Lastly, but by far, not the least, is the blues band I've been jamming with, 3 seasoned guys Eric on Bass, Ryan on drums and Paul on guitar (Surnames have been omitted to protect the guilty) they know what they're doing and they just get on with it. Playing anything, from Clapton to Gary Moore with a little Rory thrown in for good measure. A great mixture of music and played with 3 great guys.
Anyway, this is just heaven for me, kicking back and playing for the sheer enjoyment of it all. I know that we'll have to do a gig sooner, rather than later, otherwise Eric's head might explode, so watch this space for further info...
I intend to update the web site each month, upcoming gigs/dates/venues, also I hope to premier a track or album from anybody out there who wants a bit of extra exposure for their work. All you need to do is email me in the first instance, and then if it’s a possibility, we’ll get it on the site and see what the guys out there think.
Anyway Thanks For dropping By, See You Soon.... Stevie J.
